Since the COVID-19 pandemic erupted in March 2020, African women have been at the forefront of the response to the complex health, socio-economic and security crisis at both national and local levels. Through the national chapters of the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), women have joined forces to provide support to communities, advocate for women’s leadership and the consideration of their needs in COVID-19 responses and post-COVID actions, ensuring continuity of participation of women in national elections and responding to violence. The side event will provide a platform for established AWLN national chapters to share the results achieved in 2020 both in response to, and despite the COVIDd-19 pandemic. By showcasing the realizations of six AWLN national chapters, the side event aims to facilitate understanding of the impact, the COVID-19 pandemic and its response, has had on women’s leadership in Africa, with a particular focus on the six AWLN pillars of governance and political participation, peace and security, women’s entrepreneurship, agriculture, social mobilization, and youth. Moreover, the event will offer an opportunity to build synergies between AWLN and the Generation Equality Actions Coalitions, namely the Action Coalition on Feminist Movements and Leadership, and the Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action Compact.
